NELSON MERRY SCHOOL As those who attended the 2004 reunion may recall, a suggestion was made that Nelson Merry School of Jefferson City, Tennessee be added to the list of educational institutions honored by the Reunion of the Ages organization. At the March 14, 2005 meeting of the general body, a motion was made and passed unanimously to add Nelson Merry to the list. For Your Information: Nelson Merry School, founded April 5, 1890, was named for Rev. Nelson Merry, a pioneer Negro Baptist preacher in Tennessee, The land was purchased from H. L. Williams and his wife in the name of Trustee Nelson College for the price of $850.00. The school closed in 1965. At this time there is an enthusiastic group of Nelson Merry alumni and friends at work with the organization. If you, or someone you know, has an affiliation with Nelson Merry and want to get involved, let us know. * * * * * * * * 3RD ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The Reunion of the Ages’ Third Annual Golf Tournament held May 21, 2005, was dedicated to the memory of former Mayor of Newport, Tennessee, Roland Dykes, Jr. A plaque along with a certificate recognizing his meritorious service to Morristown and the Lakeway community was presented to his son, Trey Dykes, and other members of his family. Money raised in this event was used to supplement the Reunion of the Ages James A. Nichols Scholarship Fund. Golfers from Morristown, Bulls Gap, Oak Ridge, Kingsport, Jefferson City, and Knoxville competed in the tournament. Winners in the event were: First Flight 1st Place – Trey Dykes, Talbott TN 2nd Place – Clifton Jackson, Morristown, TN 3rd Place - Bill Gardner.
